Artist's Statement
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty,' – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
John Keats
This quotation from the great Romantic poet made a great impact on me from an early age and I’ve spent many years thinking about it’s implications and meaning. When Keats wrote those words 200 years ago, beauty as with the ancient Greek philosophers was considered an eternal quality like goodness or justice and something to be aspired to in all it’s aspects. Things have changed a lot in society, culture and belief systems in the intervening centuries but despite 20th and 21st century art embracing ugliness and meaninglessness as it reflects our present malaise, the truth of these words remains for me. Beauty is not the social media selfie or the airbrushed cover photo but a moment of revelation or a glimpse of light catching form that inspires when it is known by the soul to be true.
My aspiration is to make beautiful and intriguing images which uplift and inspire. A key theme in my work is the multiple levels or layers of consciousness which make up our experience of the natural and metaphysical worlds. As theoretical physics and our glimpses of the quantum world evolve, parallels emerge with the philosophical and spiritual understanding gained from the world’s diverse yet connected cultural histories. Archetypal myths and the inherent processes of change in the universe become unified.
